New Music: Altvater – Arcturus

Operating out of Columbia in South Carolina, Altvater takes a rhythm-oriented approach to a downtempo-inspired sound, with echoes of early techno providing colour and warmth to a glacial but imperious ambience, as you can hear on his new track Arcturus.

The track hisses in to existence, like an old school 45 before the throbbing bass and eclectic samples create a sense of steady drive combined with an air of leisurely menace.

There’s a sensation of waiting for of some ominous event to occur as the track builds slowly, but cleverly cuts out before providing the killer blow leaving the listener in a state of suspense.

Arcturus is a taster for the as yet unreleased Walking Creatures EP, but you can listen to some of Altvater’s back catalogue on Soundcloud and Spotify.
