Hull band bdrmm (it took me a minute or two!) take some stark sounds and turn them in to something rather beautiful on the elegiac Question Mark. Have a listen to the track below, I’m sure you’ll agree.
Capturing some of the sounds of early psychedelia, lush shoegaze and a chorus worthy of Oasis, the band let the song speak for itself. Vocalist Ryan Smith says the track is about how “being told you’ve done something wrong and believing you’ve done something wrong are completely different things.”
That’s something that comes across not only in the lyrics, but in the wilful way the band ignore musical conventions, dipping round genres and eschewing great moments for gentle tones. But it’s the humanity of the song that sets it apart but makes it feel open and honest at the same time.
Question Mark is out now via Sonic Cathedral’s Singles Club so there’ll be a very limited supply of vinyl for non-subscribers. The track can also be streamed on Spotify. You can find out more about the album and other news from bdrmm by checking out their Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts.
