Vancouver’s shoegaze inspired Did You Die made quite an impression in Canada and beyond with their Royal Unicorn album, topping college charts and selling out on vinyl. Now working on their sophomore LP, they’ve dropped this video for new song, We Can Do Whatever.

I suspect one of the reasons this track got under my skin is the way in which it channels so much of the indie sound of the late 80s and early 90s. Shoegaze is certainly a strong influence, but there’s a warmer, more accessible vibe here – think Slowdive meets late-era Cocteau Twins. The melody hints at the early days of SST and Sub Pop as a driving drone-like energy powers the song along; at once both effervescent and slightly maudlin. There’s a heck of a lot going on here, and I like it all.

You can also listen to the song on Spotify and Bandcamp. Be sure to check the band out over on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, where you can discover more listening options for We Can Do Whatever, and keep up with news about the upcoming album.
