New Music: Dream Lake – Runaway

Swedish dreampop duo Dream Lake have been releasing music since 2013, which is when they dropped their self-titled EP. Since then, singer Isabella Svärdstam and multi-instrumentalist and music producer Niklas Willar Lidholm have created a slim but increasingly essential body of work juxtaposing melancholy with reverie over shimmering guitars and gently unsettling electronic soundscapes, as typified by new single Runaway.

The duo say they draw inspiration from acts like Beach House, Coldplay, The Doors, Led Zeppelin and The Dream Academy, and you can hear the indie and rock influences on Runaway, but that intensity is softened by layers of guitar and electronica, giving the song a contradictory electropop sensibility.

The vocals harmonies are smooth and entrancing, adding to the song a sense of lotus-eating dislocation. Less dreampop, more fugue-pop – that’s Runaway.

The track is out now, streaming on Spotify and Soundcloud and will feature along with the  BBC Radio 1 playlisted Midnight Sun on their forthcoming album, Lux, out 24 November 2017 on NIWI Records – keep an eye on the band’s official website or Twitter for more details.
