As a warmup for her forthcoming EP, rising Australian singer Eliott has dropped a new single in the form of quiet stormer Calling. Collaborating with Jack Grace again, who co-wrote and produced the song, she’s displayed an assured, deft quality that belies her youth. You can check out the Maddy King directed video, which was filmed in a newly built greenhouse, below.
There’s a deceiving simplicity to the track, probably due to the winning decision to let Eliot’s voice be the focus of so much of the rhythm and emotion that flows like a fine wine through every moment and every note. Subtle strings and gentle washes of electronics add touches of warmth and colour to the nuanced vocal performance, all of which lends the Scandinavian style electro-ballad a real feeling of truth and honesty.
She says of the song. “Calling is really the only heartbreak song on my upcoming EP – it’s about longing for someone to come back. I had this one line in my head for about two years which I never really fit with anything “so I’m calling out to you, like a wolf in the cold, howling for your love – so close but it’s not enough” and then one day I was in the studio with Jack Grace and it just moulded into this intense ballad – it took me two years to put those emotions into a song, and Calling is what came from it.”
