Sisters Avery and Elle O’Brien make up Canadian indie pop duo Harlequin Gold, and it’s fair to state they’ve certainly struck gold on their second single, the wistful and engaging Youth.
The song reads like the end of a love affair, not with another person, but with youth and the idea of being young. Elegiac and poignant yet set to a bright indie pop melody, Youth successfully evokes the mixed feelings and sensations that occur when we realise time is passing and we are changing – whether we like it or not.
The vocals capture the sense of innocence being lost, and burn with anger and acceptance, as if grieving for the approaching, unavoidable changes in life.
They sisters had this to say about the inspiration behind the track: “Youth is about transitioning out of the antics and drama of being young. How it’s a bittersweet process that can be extremely healthy but also difficult to grapple with in a culture that puts so much value on being young.”
