As an outlet for them to get across the motivations and passions behind their music and art, the Q&A nature of this section gives the artist free reign to invite the curious into their world to discover what makes them tick; musically and sometimes personally too.

Introducing: David Harks

Over the past couple of years, David Harks has been quietly building up a reputation with his band Safetalk, in addition to solo releases on labels like Sunday Best, Kitsune and Eskimo Recordings that have seen him tipped by the likes of DIY, Clash, Neon Gold, Thump and many more. On top of his collaborations with other acts, Harks has released a new solo single in the form of Avalon. We decided to catch up with him to find out more about what makes this prolific artist tick!

Introducing: Lyves

Lyves is the musical alias of London based singer, songwriter and producer Francesca Bergami. After contemplating a career in music, she instead studied psychology and worked in psychiatry and working as a mental health advocate before returning to her first passion, making music. Both Holding Back and the current single Cover Me were released with PRSF funding, as Lyves was recently awarded their ‘Women Make Music’ grant. We caught up with this exciting new artist to find out more.

Introducing: Johnny Normal

Johnny Normal has been a fan of synthpop and electronica since his mid-teens and has always had a passion for music. Fatherhood encouraged him to turn his own musical ideas in to reality and he has since released numerous albums and has worked with – and become friends with – some of his musical heroes. After a long and serious illness, Johnny is back in the saddle and has numerous projects on the go; as a musician, promoter, radio presenter and more! But we’ll let the man speak for himself, eh?

Introducing: Cynthia’s Periscope

 Paul Morrice is the prime mover behind electronic act Cynthia’s Periscope and is also involved in  Tilted Fiction Promotions. It’s a promotions company that specialises in bringing exciting and innovative music to Manchester; predominately focussing on electronic music. This month they’ll be bringing together an eclectic array of experimental electronic artists to perform at Electric Matinee, which is being held at Aatma in Manchester this month.

Introducing: Cusi Coyllur

Shannen Roberts is Cusi Coyllur, (coo-see coy-your), an Inca princess name, and is variously an experimental pianist, singer and mental health advocate, as well as blogging on various physical health issues. Speaking about amivulnerable she writes: “I hope this music video can help others understand the pain that trauma survivors go through and the urgency to stop normalizing abuse, especially the types that are often not recognized as harmful such as verbal abuse”. We spoke to her about her music, herself and her life.

Introducing: Magdalena Bay

Though they’ve known each other since high school and have played in bands together in the past, Magdalena Bay only started making music as a duo as recently as last year. Described by our good selves as ‘a perfect confection of electropop and synthwave sounds’, the duo has consistently released quality intelligent pop over the last year or so, with their most recent single being the sparkly disco stomp Move Slow. Introducing: Android Lust

Android Lust is the one-woman project of Bangladeshi-born New Yorker (but now resident in L.A.)  Shikhee, who has been releasing music under the Al moniker since the late-1990s, releasing her first album Resolution in 1998. Her music balances elements of rock, industrial, electropop and classical styles to create a sound that is individual, challenging but very rewarding for the listener. We caught up with Shikhee for a chat.
