London-based July Jones says 2020 Girls marks the end of an era musically. Now working with producers Sacha Skarbek (Adele, Lana Del Rey, Miley Cyrus), Naughty Boy and Raul Refree (Rosalia), she demonstrates what attracted them to her sound and vision.
The track kicks off with a witty a subtle nod to the classic Cyndi Lauper song Girls Just Want to Have Fun – something that continues throughout the song. Jones demonstrates with ease that she knows to create pop music that is intelligent, confident, and incredibly catchy as she makes references to other landmark woman-oriented songs – see if you can spot them!
The lyrics are positive, possibly a bit tongue in cheek at times, but focused on women and their right to be themselves. But the knockout blow is the way Jones weaves the pop, RNB, and trap sounds together with a voice that’s as sweet and sharp as honey on the comb. With a strong and timely message, 2020 Girls is perfect pop for the times we live in.
Jones says about the song, “2020 Girls is about showing the new era of women empowerment. With its lyrics, which some people might find provocative, 2020 Girls shows women in a less emotional light. The chorus being ‘fuck him on the first date, tell him that he can’t stay, 2020 no shame,’ I tried to show its okay to have one-night stands, multiple lovers as a woman. I also wanted to emphasize on a diversity of women by including trans women and women from different ethnic background in the music video, breaking down a stereotype of what a woman looks like and how a woman should behave.”
July Jones’ 2020 Girls is out now and can be listened to or downloaded on all major platforms, including Spotify.
