American experimentalist musician Katie Gately leads a double life of sorts. High profile remixes for the likes of Björk and Zola Jesus go hand in hand with her own genre-defying music, like the suspenseful Waltz. Watch the video for the song below.

If you’re familiar with the work of acts like Nick Cave or Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows, then Waltz will appeal to you. There’s a literary sensibility to the lyrics, one where complex ideas and emotions are being expressed with clinical precision and ease. Gately achieves that feat not just through words, but with her vocal phrasing and judicious use of classical elements in the arrangement, giving the track a ‘Grand Guignol meets Gothic drama’ quality. Equal parts beauty and danger, you’ll love and possibly fear this song.
