The first time I listened to Floating In A Vacuum by Isle of Wight quintet Plastic Mermaids I thought I’d fallen into some mirror universe occupied by the cast of Salad Fingers – The Musical (and I mean that as a compliment!). Don’t let that scare you though, just watch the video and enjoy this spacey skateboard ride of a song which will feature on their upcoming album Suddenly Everyone Explodes.
There’s nothing quite like this out there at the moment – you could probably reference Henge or Pink Floyd, but then Queen at their most operatic would just as easily fit the bill. As eccentric as it anthemic, it’s the sound of a band that knows what it wants and if that confuses the rest of us – well we just need to get used to it.
I suspect we’ll be hearing a lot of this band in the coming months, even though they have been around for a while now.
Floating In A Vacuum can be streamed on Spotify and other digital platforms, whilst Suddenly Everyone Explodes is released on 24th May 2019 – keep an eye on their official Facebook and Twitter feeds to hear more from the band.
