Playlists //

As part of our mission to bring you new and interesting music, we feature occasional playlists from friends, guests and contributors. Our playlists usually have a theme such as a specific genre, era, place or topic; they could be songs that have tickled the fancy of the complier, or a list of tracks and musical influences that inspired them or connected with them in some way.

The Weekly Roundup 19.03.17

Sometimes when I listen to submissions it feels like I’ve wandered in to a musical word salad. Musicians are drawing influences from so many different genres, cultures and scenes that at times it can be hard for them to accurately describe on paper what becomes more obvious on listening. We live in a hyper-connected culture where the need to bond immediately, through words, pictures and sound has sidelined the actual content, for me at least. What really matters at the end of the day is how good the music is, how it makes you feel and where it takes you; and I’m pleased to say that the tracks in this week’s roundup have taken me to my happy place.

The Weekly Roundup 12.03.17

As the weekly roundup progresses through the year, it becomes easier to spot where the musical hotspots are in various countries. Brooklyn seems a centre of activity, also Toronto, London, Barcelona, Copenhagen and Tel Aviv to name a few more.  One thing they all have in common is that they are all welcoming places, and if you are going to make music or art that is outside the mainstream, then they already have a culture and support network that enables artistic expression.   Here’s what they’ve been bringing to our attention this week.

The Weekly Roundup 05.03.17

Another weekend of gigs is behind us; from the harshest of breaks to the fluffiest of synthpop, and what good fun it all was. I try to keep as open a mind about music as possible, preferring to believe that it is not always a case of good or bad, but of what you like and what you don’t and that means that discovering new bands is a constant source of pleasure and excitement, right? But enough of that flummery – let’s get on with the show. Here are ten tracks that have piqued my interest this week.

The Weekly Roundup 26.02.17

We’ve had a rather hectic week here in Manchester; four gigs and a few after parties in six nights have left us rather exhausted but very happy. It’s great to live in a city with a vibrant music scene: one night we’re at an arena gig, the next it’s cramming into a downstairs bar for a packed and sweaty, DIY affair. Music is precious it its own right, but in a live setting, the opportunity it gives us to be with friends, create memories and connect with an artist in a communal setting is incredibly important. Cherish that. And so after that aside (!), on to the weekly roundup – I hope you like our discoveries for this week.

The Weekly Roundup 12.02.17

Another week goes by and the world is going one way, or the other, or both at the same time – we’re seeking temporary refuge in music because as Sterling Void so aptly puts it “I hope it’s gonna be alright ‘cause the music plays forever”. Here’s what’s been keeping us on the level this week – enjoy.

The Weekly Roundup 29.01.17

This last week or so has seen political upheavals and the office cat shedding copious amounts of fur over every possible surface. Maybe that is why so much of the music in this weeks’ playlist has such a superficially fluffy vibe to it, but generally the tracks have positive messages. So here are ten of the best tracks we’ve heard in the last week that we think you’d enjoy.
