California raised but Detroit-based vocalist and producer Alyssa Midcalf has branched out from being half of Parts to record solo under the name Primer. TVI (The Void Inside) is the latest taster for her upcoming Novelty album which is due for release on 1st March via YHS Records.

It’s an intriguing song to say the least, her heartfelt vocals and the analogue drenched electronica actually putting me in mind of acts like The Cure and New Order in an artistic more than a sonic sense, capturing a very post-punk sensibility as it plays on.

There’s a throbbing bassline underpinning the track, but the monochrome warmth of the arrangement and the lyrics – which Midcalf describes as ‘a commentary on societal trauma and abuse’ – add a deeper, richer and slightly more sombre tone.

Novelty can be pre-ordered via Bandcamp, where you can also hear the tracks Anesthetized and A Broken Person’s Game. You can also catch up with the tracks on Spotify and Soundcloud.
