New Music: RUDE GRL – That’s the Way It Is (Survival of the Sickest)

The new duo Rude Grl takes the vocals of diva-in-the-making Jenna Dickens and the musical and production skills of Ben Langmaid (ex La Roux) who she met in 2015,  and brews up a left field polemic with That’s the Way it is (Survival of the Sickest). Drawing influences from early 80s and 90s electro hip-hop, and post-punk, the track channels an almost tribal electro sound, over a Run DMC sample.

In her former incarnation of JLD, she collaborated with the likes of Wiley, Bless Beats and Roll Deep. As part of the band ‘The Binary Kids’, she toured with Lady Sovereign supporting N-Dubz and working with Basement Jaxx.

When she was 18 she signed to Mercury Records but was dropped without ever releasing any music. She was snapped up as a model by Elite Models, but around this time she suffered a personal tragedy and began struggling to find her way through her own personal baggage, while her alcoholism raged. She explored her post-punk influences during this time, releasing a few songs and featuring on Sub Focus’ debut album.

Jenna Dickens said: “I’m so excited to get this music out there! I hope it causes some mayhem. Ben is like a big brother to me, he’s really been there for me personally, as well as in music. That’s what has made the music so special. We were allowed a space to put everything into it: the raw and the real…no holding back!”

Ben Langmaid said: “Jenna and I clicked immediately, as soon as we met. When it comes to her rhymes and flows, combined with the journey she’s been through, she’s a musical force to be reckoned with. She is the real deal, and a true star, so I was excited to work with her and I’m really proud of the music we’ve created.”

The track will be released via Rat Boy’s new label so keep an eye out for more information!
