Electronic act sgmaniak is the musical brainchild of Matt Anderson, a computer science student at Vanderbilt University in Nashville USA. He describes himself as being a guitar player with a background in jazz, funk, and rock, and in his own music he says throws electronic and hip-hop influences into an already eclectic mix. His latest release Near or Far is a real slow burner with the mainly vocal opening tricking the listener into expecting a ballad, before building in to a lyrically left field, mellow dance track.
Think Hot Chip and Pharrell getting together and making violin-soaked garage and that’s just a hint at what’s going on here. Overall, Near or Far has a real dreamy but clubby quality to it, as it creates a hypnotic, occasionally tricky series of grooves and rhythms.
Anderson throws in a cool musical curveball at the end of the track in the form of a slightly retro guitar solo that still feels very much at home on a track that feels very oriented to the dancefloor.
Near or Far is out now, streaming on Spotify as well as Soundcloud.
