New Music: Soft Riot – The Eyes on The Walls

  • New Music: Soft Riot - The Eyes on The Walls

Soft Riot is the musical alter-ego of JJD, Canadian by birth and an ex-resident of London and Sheffield, now based in Glasgow, Scotland. Seemingly with a penchant for living in post-industrial settings, his music mirrors that with its shadowy take on synth-laden anti-pop. New single The Eyes On The Wall is out now and there’s also a video to accompany the track.

Possibly reflecting his cultural background and his current roots, The Eyes On The Wall has elements of 80s post-punk, the Montreal darkwave sound and nuances of Sheffield electronic pioneers like The Human League and Cabaret Voltaire.

Austere but captivating, as if a fragment of the soundtrack for a long-lost film about urban and personal decay, the track evokes memories and feelings of claustrophobic nights alone in the city.

The Eyes On The Walls is from the upcoming and sixth Soft Riot album The Outsider In The Mirrors which is out 9th February via Possession Records – you order the album via Bandcamp in vinyl, CD and cassette formats. Be sure to check out his Facebook page for information on upcoming events including the album launch party on the 9th at The Hug and Pint in Glasgow.  The gig also features labelmate and fellow Possession Records’ co-owner Ubre Blanca.
