Melbourne’s indie poppers Swim Team drop their Home Time album in the next few weeks, and they’ve filmed a poignant video for the track New Year to whet our appetites. Check it out below.

Existing in a similar musical universe to Sleater-Kinney, the song has a lot of the flair and fire of a Riot Grrrl song, but takes a more reflective and personal approach. Seemingly light and almost fey at times, the dark shades in the arrangement and lyrics hint at the expectations we put on ourselves to please others.  It has something of The Go-Betweens in the guitar, vocals and wistful mood as well, for me a sure sign of understated but quietly confident quality.

The band had this to say about the song: ‘With the ushering in of each new year, along come a swathe of resolutions. New Year pays homage to the good intentions and the bad realities that inevitably take their place.’

New Year is also streaming on Spotify, and a limited edition yellow vinyl edition of the album is now up for pre-order on Bandcamp. You can get news about the band, upcoming gigs – including an album launch – by checking out the trio’s Facebook and Instagram accounts or clicking here.
