The Hearing is the solo project of Helsinki-based musician Ringa Manner. With Demian, her third album, due for release later this month, she’s given us a delicious teaser for it with her new track ICU.
The world-renowned Scandi sound is not often associated with Finland, but it’s fair to say that Manner does not stick to its standard electro-pop script here. There’s the brooding vocals and experimental flourishes in the arrangement for sure, but they’re framed in a tempo of vocal that works as well on the dancefloor as it would in a live setting. Mainly though it’s a pop song; a very superior, clever and most importantly enjoyable one, even as the lyrics explore some difficult times and themes.
Manner had this to say about the album: “Demian is the next evolution stage of a being, and the missing piece of an album trilogy. It’s the start of something new, and an end to something meaningful from before. It’s having your broken heart heal just in time for someone to break it all over. It’s crying for people living in nightmares, and for the deafening beauty of one’s own cosmic uselessness. It’s shielding your mind with a pillow fortress but inviting everyone else in too.”
The Hearing’s ICU is out now via Solina Records and can be streamed or downloaded on all major platforms. Head over to The Hearing’s official Facebook and Instagram accounts for news on the song, upcoming releases, live dates – including some dates in Hamburg and Berlin – and more.
Demian is out on October 25th and will be available in vinyl and digital formats.
