The release of Trentemøller’s Obverse album is fast approaching – 27th September in fact! To get us all geared up for what’ll surely be an album of the year, he’s given us all a preview of the delights to come with new track Try A Little.
The song, which features jennylee of Warpaint on vocals, continues the musical themes of his previous album Fixion to an extent. Those dark tones still dominate the track, but there’s a subtle shift away from the electronic palette, scattering elements of post-punk within the intimate twist on darkwave melodies.
The blend of disassociation and desperation coming through jennylee’s vocal delivery adds to the sense of darkness reaching out to the light that pervades not just the lyrics, but the track overall. It’s miasmic, mysterious too, but carries itself with a confident beauty and counter-intuitive warm quality that you won’t want to resist.
Anders had this to say about the track: “This song is very dear to me. It speaks the truth regarding some of the hardest things to admit to oneself. It was an act of vulnerability. As per usual, it was a stream of conscious exercise, this time directed towards myself and the relationships most present in my life, asking for help, presence. You know… ‘show up! Please!’”
As for her vocal and lyrical contributing, as well as the experience of working with Anders again, jennylee disclosed: “It’s always been extremely challenging coming up with vocals to music that is not my own, yet for some reason it happens pretty effortlessly every time with Anders, whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with again.”
Trentemøller’s Try A Little is out now and available to stream or download. For more information on the song, details on any upcoming live dates, be sure to check out his official Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts.
