New Music: Whales & This Lake – Something in Your Grass

  • New Music: Whales & This Lake - Something in Your Grass

The charismatic trio Whales & This Lake comprises Hans Olav Settem, Max Peder Brekke and Anders Søvik Hjelden. As a reaction to growing up in small towns, all started making music, varying from indie rock to jazz and electronica. When they later met in Oslo, their different personalities and musical backgrounds urged them into making their very own blend of electronic pop music. You can hear the result of this years of fusion, experimentation and collaboration on Something in Your Grass – with its unique and captivating mix of shoegaze, electronica and dreampop.

On the surface, the track is pleasing to the ear with a nice blend of clashing instrumental sounds and urgent electronic textures. Yet on a lyrical and melodic level, there is a sense of sadness and frustration, the melancholic envelope with a compelling feel of muddled clarity. An enchanting mix of electronic vibes and rock sensibilities, the band crafts one earworm melody after another with splashes of campy vocals, jittery beats and pulsating basslines.

Something in Your Grass features on the bands new album Send a Man Down which is out now via Koke Plate and can be streamed on Spotify. You can find out more about the band, including live dates on their website.
