New Music: Sunlust – Magnum Opus

It shows a lot of confidence in your sound and abilities to name a song Magnum Opus, even in jest, but we think Canada’s Sunlust has managed to pull it off quite nicely. It’ll feature on Sunlust’s debut LP Geek Confessions, due out on the 12 of April.

Magnum Opus is a glorious noise, and one made from the most basic elements: vocals, guitar, rhythm section. But the band does so much with it. Unbridled emotion flows through the vocals and lyrics; the arrangement is raw at times, and knows when to dial things down for maximum effect. If you like The Distillers and The Donnas, then you’ll want to listen to Sunlust.

They say about the song, “Magnum Opus was written in a bedroom in small-town Canada about unrequited love and was lovingly/jokingly named Magnum Opus because the verse is only 4 chords. The song really transformed into a stomping, whirling punk rock jam when it was brought into the studio, as structural changes as well as guitar/vocal effects brought the song new life.”
