New Music: Babaganouj – She Wears Velvet

Brisbane’s Babaganouj formed over a decade ago and have released a series of singles since then. It’s taken until 2023 for them to release their debut album, titled Jumbo Pets, but it’s been well worth the wait as She Wears Velvet shows.

One of thirteen songs on the album, She Wears Velvet features lead vocals from Harriette Pilbeam AKA Hatchie. With three accomplished vocalists in the band, it’s no surprise the song relies on vocal harmonies to add emotional warmth and depth. As it does that, the rhythm section and lead guitar melody add some muscular tones to an ostensibly dreampop-infused arrangement. It’s a standout song on an incredibly strong album.

Jumbo Pets is out now via Brisbane record label Coolin’ By Sound. You can pick it up in CD and digital formats and a rather cool aquamarine vinyl edition on Bandcamp.
