New Music: Supercaan – Ricochet

With a name inspired by the novelist J.G. Ballard’s thriller Super-Cannes, you can be sure that Supercaan approaches music from a darker, more different direction than most indie bands. Have a listen to Ricochet and you’ll know instantly what I mean.

The track, which features on their upcoming sophomore album A Tiger Walks the Streets, is rock but infused with lushly arranged, driving electronica sensibility. The sonorous and wistful vocals of Greg Milner echo Baxter Dury and Paul Banks, rumbling and melancholic, an ocean of sadness in every word.

Arpeggios sparkle and the New Order meets Rotersand electro/indie/rock fusion of the arrangement is as moody as the lyrics are revelatory. The song certainly succeeds in cutting through to the listener, an important aim for Supercaan lyricist Tom Whitefield.

The band plays the London’s Amersham Arms on the 30th of September, West Hampstead Arts Club on the 27th of October and Birmingham’s Hare and Hounds on the 29th of October.
