New Music: Um, Jennifer? – Cut Me Open

New York based trans punk duo leah and fig are Um, Jennifer? They follow up their electric debut Girl Class single with the equally vivacious and emotionally revealing Cut Me Open.

While the vocals have a wry and laconic ambience that feels perfect for indie pop, they also sit well on the grungier, gritty tones of Cut Me Open. The chorus is memorable if deliciously graphic, and the song showers the listener with hints of The Breeders, Belly, and Pixies. It also skews those bands’ loud-quiet-loud template into something even more visceral, akin to a Velvet Underground or Le Tigre deep cut.

Speaking about the track, the band discloses “Cut Me Open is a plea to be eviscerated by love. It’s all the ways we hurt one another in our efforts to get closer, and how some of that pain can be pleasurable. Above all, it’s a love song.”
