New Music: Bryony Williams – Trip Me Up

A tale of therapy and young love, Trip Me Up by Wolverhampton native Bryony Williams tackles both subjects in a sensitive and lively manner. There’s a lot of wit in the lyrics, and quite a few insights too, all set to an arrangement full of post-punk and dreampop nuances.

Though the lyrics can be dark at times, that passes into moments of joy and self-discovery, so much so that the glistening and nostalgic indie tones of Trip Me Up will appeal to fans of Marika Hackman, Courtney Barnett, and The Big Moon.

Speaking about Trip Me Up, Williams says, “Originally written back in 2017 whilst watching the cult classic, The Virgin Suicides, on repeat to analyse for my film studies class on my media degree, with this song, I began writing a response to the storyline and themes entangled in the narrative of the film. This response, admittedly, was only the first verse and chorus, and only did the song find its final lyrics in the recording process of the album in 2022.”

“At the core of Trip Me Up, I essentially wanted to revisit typical old school, prom-like romance we get from films made in the 90s, but with a modern twist. The narrative throughout the track though is through a female lens and shows the frustrations and complications that young love encounters (or at least like it is in the movies) whilst on a journey of reclaiming a sense of self and power in this storyline.”

Trip Me Up and more music from Bryony Williams can downloaded on Bandcamp and heard on Spotify and Deezer. The song will also feature on her upcoming two-part concept album, which is set for release later this year.
