New Music: PHWOAR – Surge

Hot on the heels of Waiting for the Sun, Birmingham duo PHWOAR bring more joyous and socially conscious noise our way with Surge.

Surge carries similar musical themes to the previous single, though with more emphasis on a raw, lo-fi indie rock aesthetic. There are some wonderful art rock flourishes and asides in the vocals, as if the duo are breaking a musical fourth wall.

The ‘surge’ refrain and the lyrics in general could easily function as a call to arms, but PHWOAR are primarily here to entertain, and maybe educate, the listener. And for me, they do both of those just fine.

“We are living in unprecedented times,” says the band. “It’s hard not to feel anxious about the people and structures in power. Surge is an empowering alt-rock anthem, urging listeners to fight against injustice.”

Surge can be downloaded on Bandcamp and streamed on Spotify. The duo’s Flowers Through The Concrete EP is set for release on the 11th of April.

For further streaming options for PHWOAR’s music, and to keep up to date with news of the upcoming EP, follow PHWOAR on their Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok socials.
