New Music: Magnum Dopus – You Wanted Action…You Got It!

I have to admit, the band name had me expecting something more in the vein of pop-punk or garage rock, but I was pleasantly blindsided by the thoughtful New Wave sounds of Magnum Dopus.

The band cites Bowie and Blondie as influences on the track, and you can hear that in the vocals, and the shimmer of the disco-fied bass line.

Though the wittily titled You Wanted Action…You Got It! also reminded me of Simple Minds’ New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84), as the track parlays intimate moments into something anthemic and sensual, and the vocals occasionally divert into the smoky melancholy of Bryan Ferry.

It has all the hallmarks of a song that becomes the soundtrack to memories, evoking times past, when pop once again seemed something new and exciting, in a sophisticated manner.
