New Music: Marta – Out The Way (feat. Tricky)
Marta and Tricky have worked together since a surprise performance with him in 2017. On Out The Way, experimental electronica and post-punk are brought together in a most unexpected fashion.
The vocals give the song so much of its dark and smouldering energy, though the arrangement is as divine as it is taut – and occasionally menacing in tone.
The duality of the vocal performances gives the track a sensual and brooding ambience, a feeling that an unknown event or occurrence lies just out of the reach and understanding of the listener, leaving you looking in at an electric fusion of sounds, styles, and mood. Out The Way is the perfect soundtrack for robbing a bank or someone’s heart in a Nouvelle Vague heist movie.
Marta says of her working relationship with Tricky, “Out of nowhere my friend who worked at a radio station called and asked if I wanted to sing with Tricky, and for a second I didn’t think it was Tricky. He said, ‘Come in an hour for soundcheck.’ Next thing I know, I’m in a taxi.”
After performing When We Die with him, the two hit it off. “At first, Tricky didn’t say anything,” says Marta. “Then he asked, ‘Do you have a passport?’ I said ‘no’. He turned to his tour manager and said, ‘She needs her passport by January; we’re going on tour!’ I’ve been with him ever since.”
Out The Way is out now via False Idols to stream on Bandcamp and Spotify. For other listening options and all the latest news from Marta, follow her on Facebook or Instagram.
