New Music: Ash Red – D.B. COOPER

Cork trio Ash Red follow up their STUPID EP with the blistering genre mash-up of D.B. COOPER.

You can identify some of the roots of the track – Pixies, Nirvana, and The Murder Capital, for example – but it’s what the band does with those that makes the track so unnervingly good.

It acknowledges the loud-quiet-loud format beloved of alt.rock, but flips that on its head and amps up the feral energy of the individual performances. Rather like the song’s protagonist, this post-punk/grunge cross-pollination feels like it may spiral out of control at any moment, such is its uninhibited nature.

“D.B. Cooper was a guy who hijacked a plane and never got caught. He never faced any sort of justice, and his whereabouts are unknown,” says the band.

“[Our] song is about someone who takes too many drugs and drinks too much, is promiscuous, and, like D.B. Cooper, never faces the consequence of his recklessness.”
