New Music: Fold – 10 Past Midnight

The looping beats and spoken word samples of 10 Past Midnight hark back to an iconic era in British hip-hop and electronica, but the song’s message is equally timeless.

To mark Fold’s tenth anniversary, 10 Past Midnight features clips of John Lennon, Malcolm X, Bruce Lee, Mr Gee, Fannie Lou Hamer, Kurt Vonnegut and Jimmy Carter – voices that had been sampled on the band’s debut album back in 2015. The track’s title – also the title of their new EP – is a reference to the final track on that album, Two Past Midnight.

Weaving those samples together, Fold build a moment in activism and art in musical form on 10 Past Midnight. It doesn’t preach or plead but offers hope and light, the glimpse of a better future. And right now, we need that.

10 Past Midnight is available only on Bandcamp and Ampwall at present, due to what the band highlights as the “broken models and unethical investments these platforms engage in.”
