New Music: Awake & Dreaming – I U Me

Canadian quartet Awake & Dreaming absorb the best of 90s and 00s indie rock and flawlessly future-proof it on I U Me.

The band, comprising Sasha Kristoff, Stefan Schneider, Phil Lee, and Ryan Dugal, explore the anthemic side of that genre, but here, they shift it into personal, ballad-like territory that nonetheless is full of power.

Kristoff’s vocals have a gothic/folk subtext to them, one that is enhanced by the confessional lyrics and her bandmate’s ability to fuse grand sounds and quiet moments into a cinematic soundscape. That 90s essence is pronounced, but if you create a song that can hold its own against Keane, Muse, or The Cranberries at their best, that is worth sharing with the world.
