EP Review: Dancers Die – Daughters

South Floridians Dancers Die embrace the heavier side of alternative rock on their Daughters EP but also offer up some surprises.

A common theme throughout Daughters’ five songs is the heavy rock of the 80s and 90s, one that, in its commercial form, regularly hit the top of the charts.

On Chipped Away and All Your Burdens, that makes its presence known, but the Miami-based outfit write their own scripts, musically and lyrically. As much as both songs are powered by rock and roll, especially in the livewire vocals, Dancers Die are adept at adopting from post-hardcore and grunge, not aggressively so, but definitely fervent in the intensity they display on the tracks.

Sideways dials the tempo down a bit, the vocals more personal to keep your focus on the lyrics. The band shows that they can pivot from the anthemic to the intimate here, as the changing mood of the song as it reaches its conclusion allows them to show their dexterity.

The title track, Daughters, could almost be a power ballad, again attributable in large part to the vocals, but the band also lets their alternative side shine. Yes, it has a classic rock ambience, but I also got hints of Blood Sugar Sex Magik in the clean, tight, physicality of the arrangement.

Dancers Die don’t do straight-up rock on Daughters, coming closest on Dollars Dyed, but there’s enough of that in each song to please fans that like their rock music hard and heavy. They display emotional intelligence in the lyrics, though, and you can tell a lot of thought was put into them, as well as working to incorporate a range of influences into every arrangement. Meaty and brainy, it’s easy to get into the EP, whatever kind of rock fan you are, thanks to the musicianship and open-mindedness of the band.
