New Music: Blush. – Seasons

Canadian alt-indie rock quartet Blush. have a peculiarly 90s-influenced groove on Seasons, but it’s what they do with those that makes for an endearing curveball.

Around the chorus, especially in the bare tones of the vocals and lead guitar, Seasons looks to grunge for its emotional and sonic heart. But it doesn’t lose itself in raw power; it feels more in tune with Slowdive or Smashing Pumpkins at their peak.

Not so much in terms of sound, but the pastel colours have a surprising clarity in the dreamy texture. But how grand and melodic it is, how quietly assertive; that’ll grab you every time you hear it. It’s not how it sounds, but how it makes you feel, that gives it an inordinate impact.

“Seasons feels like a dream that just keeps looping,” says Blush. lead vocalist and guitarist Anton Wilson. “I think this song speaks pretty strongly to our roots as a band. It reminds me of picnic jam sessions in the park; it reminds me to take a breath, and it reminds me to never stop chasing.”
