New Music: Nicamus – My Own

Hailing from Portland, Oregon, indie outfit Nicamus delve into some foundational 80s music on My Own.

Featured on the band’s Trust Fall album, the shadows of power pop in the guitars, and the lovelorn male vocals harken back to Murmur, when that genre was transforming into a distinctly American sound, with a bit of R.E.M. and some of the nostalgic textures of The Rain Parade in the mix.

It doesn’t fully go down that Paisley Ungerground/power pop route: you can also hear the reaction to the nihilism of British punk that became the C86 and indie pop movements typified by bands like Talulah Gosh – present on My Own in the female vocals and less primal melody. It’s a great song, but you can tell Nicamus know their musical history, which is even more endearing.

“My Own is a song that is reflecting on the challenges of dealing with the family that you come from,” says the band. “As the old saying goes, we hurt the ones we love. Have you ever wished for those closest to you to make more of an effort to understand you better, and try harder to appreciate you for who you are?”
