New Music: sundayclub – Camera Shy
The rise of sundayclub over the last year or so since the release of Bannatyne in June ’25 has been a pleasure to observe.
July sees the release of their SUNDAYCLUB album, and Camera Shy is an early sign that the band’s star is set to rise even further. Comprising Courtney Carmichael and Nikki St.Pierre, sundayclub specialise in creating dream pop/shoegaze-inflected music that lyrically is often focused on a particular time and place, and also the feelings that surround them.
Carmichael has spoken about having complicated feelings towards being photographed, or ‘captured,’ and that drives the central theme of the lyrics. I can understand a reluctance to be photographed – when I was a child, an elderly relative told me that each time someone takes your picture, you lose a piece of your soul to the photograph. It may have been a joke, but I’ve never been comfortable being photographed since, and that’s why the song struck me to my core.

Society expects us to be available, to be media, and we don’t always want that – even as Courtney Carmichael’s image is above this piece, mine below. And that need to be yourself but also be public drives the narrative of Camera Shy, which is more hard-hitting than it will appear on a first listen.
SUNDAYCLUB is now up for pre-order on Bandcamp on vinyl and other formats, and is released on the 10th of July via Paper Bag Records. Follow sundayclub on Instagram for album news and details of live dates in the UK – and Hamburg – in the coming weeks.
