New Music: Van Chamberlain – The Right Line

Van Chamberlain take another step closer to the September drop of their As Far as the Eye Can See LP with The Right Line.

Following a similar sound sand style, mood- and melody-wise, to their January single Running Through the World, it weaves power pop through a dream pop loom, delicate in colour and hardy in structure, as the lyrics pose some weighty questions.

There’s a cool and crucial contradiction at the centre of the song; as fluid and frenetic as the melody may be, and no matter how heartening the textures feel, there is a downbeat aspect to the song that’s not so easy to shake off. A summer rain may be light and refreshing, but in the end, you are still wet and eventually cold.

“There was a point where it seemed like everyone around me was going through it at the same time,” reveals band member Van Chamberlain. “I didn’t have any of the answers, but I wanted to be a positive force. This is a song about wanting to give the people around you a reason to smile. It’s easy to write a song about what you’re going through. This time I wanted to write a song for everyone else.”
