New Music: Anamanaguchi – Yeah I Guess
Anamanaguchi have followed up their epic soundtrack for Scott Pilgrim EX with the chiptune-vibing punk of Yeah I Guess.
The New York outfit has always been one of the more adventurous and genre-breaking leaders of the chiptune scene – that’s why we had them play SuperByte all those years ago! As good as the OST is, Yeah I Guess builds on that markedly. Maybe that’s because it’s not conceived as part of a game, even though sounds associated with early gamer culture have a strong role here.
What makes Anamanaguchi so good at what they do, especially live, is how they bring a rock dynamic into play. That’s equally as noticeable in the michos-directed video for the track, which uses quick-fire animation to visualise the energy and faster-than-light energy of the band as they blend their signature hyperpunk sound into something rebellious and uplifting.

Guitarist and vocalist Peter Berkman says about the track, “I was inspired by Gene Wolfe’s Book of the New Sun. Yeah I Guess is about realizing you really do have control over your own life despite all the forces acting on you – and the strange weight of that freedom. In a world designed to predict programmed responses, what does it really mean to act freely? Punk music has always had a human feeling, and I think we made something that’s fully punk and fully digital.”
Of the recording process, fellow band member Ary Warnaar adds: “The song started as a melody written on Game Boy, then turned into a really raw blown-out punk demo, which we then pushed through different software until it turned into what it is now. We’ve always seen the band and our technology as productive and opposing forces, and with Yeah I Guess, we wanted to push them each as far as they’d go to see what came out.”
Yeah I Guess is out now via Polyvinyl, as is the OST for Scott Pilgrim EX. Both can be found on Bandcamp. Anamanaguchi hit the road in North America, Australia, and Japan in the coming months – hit up their Instagram, BlueSky, and Facebook feeds for details.
