New Music: C Z A R I N A – Holy Water (Majestic Remix)
C Z A R I N A joins forces with American electronic duo Majestic Phoenix to give April’s Holy Water new dimensions.
It retains some, but not all, of the elements from Neue Deutsche Todeskunst that partly define the music of C Z A R I N A: visual, vibrant, and layered with meaning. C Z A R I N A – aka Vero Faye Kitsuné – possesses a voice that is at home both within a classical-infused setting and also, as here, industrial-flavoured dance that bridges the space between stage performance and the dancefloor.
The track doesn’t lose the sense of divine reckoning that is a large part of the original, and the pounding bass line and crunching guitars work wonderfully together. Remixes usually add or take away from an original work. Majestic Phoenix do both here: giving Holy Water a club-friendly dimension as it shines a light on the role of orchestral darkwave, gothic post-metal, and dark synthpop play within C Z A R I N A’s music. It allows the vocals to be the focal point of the remix and gives the lyrics’ reflection on faith, power, and devotion added impetus and prominence.
The eagle-eyed among you will likely have already spotted the official video, itself based on the clip for the original version of Holy Water. The latter’s beautiful and bewitching imagery was inspired by Arthurian- and mediaeval-themed vintage films like Excalibur and Ladyhawke.
