New Music: AiramFM – The Impostor (Orchestral Version)

AiramFM was born in the aftermath of personal tragedy, and has since grown to be a life-affirming experience for Danish musician Maria Friis Møller.

Møller began releasing music in 2022 when grieving after losing her mother to cancer. AiramFM may have come from a need to process grief but has become a way for her to look at her life and the world around her. Her songs focus on melody and lyrics within an atmospheric electronica setting.

This revisitation of The Impostor does give an idea of what to expect from its title. I was still bowled over by how well the vocals worked with an arrangement that relies primarily on strings, voice, and percussion to set the mood while relating the personal message of lyrics to the listener. Above all, it serves to showcase how good the songwriting of Møller is. Strong songs are open to reinterpretation and complete reworking – both are present here, expansive, impressive and confident.

“[It’s] about the feeling of being different and never quite feeling like you fit in,” says Møller about the song. “About growing up with a sense of being ‘wrong’ or ‘off’ and not being able to find your place in a world that seems like it’s made for everyone else. But also, about finding strength in creating your own life and your own atmosphere instead of trying to fit in.”

You can download The Impostor (Orchestral Version) and AiramFM’s back catalogue on Bandcamp. Her music can be heard on Spotify and SoundCloud. You can learn more about the Møller and AiramFM on Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram.
