New Music: SHEEBABA – option C

An examination of individuality and ‘defectiveness’ in an age where conformity is being viewed as an imperative, SHEEBABA present the video for option C.

The song, from their haut release which is out next month, has an arrangement that is hyper-stylised and lyrics that could come straight out of Godard’s Alphaville. An anti-manifesto, option C is relentless and riveting in how it employs Neue Deutsche Welle, punk, and early 80s industrial motifs to engross the listener in tightly coiled excursions into love in what the Luxembourg-based duo says is about being about “Feeling like an object of pleasure and desire, yet never being quite enough. The song circles back to the point where we reclaim eternity, on our own, self-sufficient. If our destiny is to be the hot accessory, we will be the hottest accessory available!”

There is more to the song than that, something they highlight in the video. Talking about the concept behind option C, the duo – known only as Eliott Eccho and Prof.C – say, “In this world, society is divided into three categories. Option A: The beehive. For them, nothing matters more than having the longest hair possible. They are regarded as the perfect state of being.”

“Option B: The cowboys. They make the rules. They exist apart from the rest of society, placing themselves outside the order they impose on others. Option C: The outsiders. They are considered defective, incomplete, and in need of correction.”
