New Music: APACALDA – Dead Weight

Don’t let the occasionally bleak lyrics distract you; Dead Weight by Montreal’s APACALDA is full of life, albeit at its most dark, raw, and unvarnished. It may be difficult for some to listen, but it’s worth persevering with its tale of addiction.

Lyrically, it’s not always easy listening, especially for those who have experienced physical, emotional, or sexual mistreatment. But if you can find your way through that, you get a passionate song possessed of stunning vocal range, one that is overpowering and, at times, harnessing a seemingly genuine rage at the world. That brief primal howl towards the end, coming surely from the depths of the soul, deserves to be heard.

Reflecting on the lyrics, the artist says, “Dead Weight is about watching someone turn to drugs to soothe their torment. It’s about witnessing someone spiral into hopelessness without being able to help them conquer their own demons. It’s about the prison that love can turn into.”
