New Music: atmos bloom – Everything

Musical and life partners Tilda Gratton and Curtis Paterson are perfectly in sync on Everything, the new single from their band, atmos bloom.

The track heralds the arrival of their Everythingness album in July, and finds their personal journey from psych and rock towards the more ethereal and esoteric continues. Compared to 2023’s Sea Legs, a new and intriguing dichotomy can be detected: while the vocals are as clear as ever, they function as much as an instrument as leading the song, adding texture.

There’s no doubt that they remain at the centre of the band’s music, however. Meanwhile, the hazy arrangement is an excursion towards wispy and jangly ground most of the time; the melody is muscular, though, not hidden, instead seeking to be found.

They have cited DIIV, Ulrika Spacek, Deerhunter, and Broadcast as musical reference points for Everythingness, and at points here you can hear how Gratton’s vocals have matured in recent years to resemble those of Trish Keenan. That alone should make the album unmissable.

Talking about the genesis of the song, they say, “Everything is about the impossible task of trying to be everything all at once, balancing all that life throws at you whilst trying to find yourself and your place amidst it all.”

“[Everything] explores young adulthood and figuring out the transition between adolescence and womanhood, working through a mountain of contradictory advice and solutions…like walking a tightrope, wanting to do one thing for one reason and something else for another, knowing each decision pulls you further in a different direction.”
