New Music: Barefoot on Bumblebees – Breakables

The music of Tucson, Arizona based Barefoot on Bumblebees doesn’t make me think of desert suns, but somewhere darker and dangerously verdant.

Breakables is folk with an indie attitude but as far from indie-folk as you can possibly get. It has some of the leftfield traits of, say, Tele Novella or Emerson Woolf & the Wishbones, but has a fairy tale sound those bands don’t really tap into.

By fairy tale, I don’t mean stories of princesses and castles, but the Brothers Grimm: cautionary missives that wrap dark warnings in sweet confections and peril-filled forests that leave an uncertain but addictive aftertaste. The video reinforces that feeling, its childlike charm soon giving way to… well, I’m not spoiling that for you!
