Be The Bear is the solo project of Swedish artist and producer Christina Wehage, who also runs her own record label! The latter doesn’t stop her producing some premier pop, as you can hear on Mermaid.
The song is one of the finest examples of Nordic pop you’ll hear this year. With a vocal similarity to Frida Sundemo and Aurora, you know you’re going to get a performance that drips with emotion and considerable flair. Everything about the song is flawless; the vocals obviously, but the lyrics are the equivalent of having the sadness hugged out of you, the tempo and hooks offer food for the soul and the feet whilst the melody feels as pure and innocent as the freshest snow.
The track covers a serious topic, relating how we need to be supportive of those struggling with their mental health, but that is couched in such a positive frame makes that feel like a joy, not a responsibility. Wehage says the song title comes from the imagery from H.C. Andersen’s Danish folktale, the original Little Mermaid, she adds: ‘Did you know, in the original story she sacrificed herself for love, and ended up becoming a whisper on the wind? Mermaids don’t have eternal souls, but she finds out how she can acquire one, and spends 300 years doing good deeds with other ‘Daughters of the Air’.’
Mermaid is released via Gothenburg-based record label Loud Attic Records and you can also stream the song on Spotify. For information on other streaming and downloading choices, check out the Be The Bear Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages or click here.
