New Music: Bernardo – Bobby’s Song
Secrets of Six-Figure Women is the debut album by British-Portuguese artist Bernardo and is a delightful voyage in experimental pop.
Hard to define, tracks like Bobby’s Song have a jazz undercurrent to them but are also in the vein of the individualistic pop creations by the likes of Joy Crookes, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Brooke Combe, subverting norms while still seeking to satisfy the most discerning music fans.
The LP was co-produced by Bernardo and Dave Maclean of Django Django, and the looping, roaming arrangements are courtesy of indie legend Sean O’Hagan of The High Llamas (and Microdisney for us older folk).
So, not only is the sound of Secrets of Six-Figure Women deeply personal and highly imaginative, but also the vision behind tracks like Bobby’s Song feels perfectly formed and realised. It’s easy to see why Bernardo has been championed by the likes of Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay.

Secrets of Six-Figure Women is out now and can be picked up on Bandcamp in vinyl, cassette, and CD format. Bernardo supports The Beta Band in London on the 3rd of October. For album and ticket updates, make your way to Facebook and Instagram to follow Bernardo.
