New Music: Bleary – 925

Nashville’s Bleary tackle the nature of work in the modern age on 925 from their upcoming Little Brain LP.

Following on from recent singles sugar splint and bug, which also feature on the album, 925 has an air of post-everything fatigue, an acerbic insight into where the last few years have got us: Trump, Covid, Trump again, all the while watching ‘the vultures’ at work as we all grind away. The band has termed it an anti-work song, and it is that, especially in the way it neatly dissects the little boxes of anonymity we are increasingly being parcelled into.

The band looks forward to a better day, yet they don’t seem so sure that we will get there; no doubt that’s why its ‘loud-louder-loud’ alt-rock/heavygaze – Slowdive meets Nirvana – thunder feels like a call to arms, metaphorically at least.

It may have taken the band six years to complete the album due to working and music commitments, but to mirror the lyrics of 925, ‘Was it all worth it?’ – I’d most wholeheartedly say yes.
