New Music: bloococoon – Blossom Like a Rose

Seattle, Washington based trio bloococoon set the scene for their debut album by dropping the piano-infused shoegaze gem Blossom Like a Rose.

The band cites the likes of Massive Attack and my bloody valentine as influences, and you can hear that in the dark tones of the bassline and percussion and the ethereal lead guitar melody, respectively. The vocals bring both complementary strands together, rock-oriented with a dreamlike ambience, perfect framing for the story that lies behind the lyrics.

Says the band’s songwriter/vocalist Sharim, “Blossom Like a Rose was written upon awakening from a vivid dream in which a dark, silhouetted figure was following me. No matter the street I crossed or route that I took, the presence was beside and behind me, tracking from a distance.”

“Not threatening, just merely vying for my attention. Unable to shake the visitant, I turned and faced it. Acknowledging its presence, I gently shook my head ‘no’’ and the distant figure of my shadow saddened, softened, and began to fade.”

“Turning away and back onto the path I was walking, my heart felt light and I was filled with buoyant repose. Opening my arms, cool air breathed into my wings and I languidly sailed into the sky. When I awoke, I felt reborn and refreshed with an immense sense of tranquillity.”

“Finally, I had let go of the demons that had been haunting me, weighing me down, and holding me back. Letting go of bits of myself.”
