New Music: Carla J. Easton – Let’s Make Plans for the Weekend

Scottish musician Carla J. Easton marks her upcoming album and UK tour with Let’s Make Plans for the Weekend.

On this banger from her I Think That I Might Love You album, Easton looks to classic 90s pop for the pop/retro disco sheen and slinkiness of the track, adding a subversive indie aesthetic to that sound, as you’d expect from a member of the legendary outfit The Vaselines.

It’s not a retro song, though, instead tapping into an indefinable reworking of the emotions behind pop that set it as much alongside the likes of Annie and Robyn as classic mainstream pop sounds. The ability to play with the pop narrative is no surprise, as she has a real and profound understanding of both pop and indie: she wrote and narrated Since Yesterday: The Untold Story of Scotland’s Girl Bands, a documentary that focused on the country’s female musicians from the 60s onwards.

“I love this song so much. I knew the album was leaning more guitar indie-pop, but I couldn’t not include this,” says Easton. “Me and my friend Pedro Cameron (Man of the Minch) wrote and demoed it in two hours, we’re both massive fans of Kylie Minogue and Girls Aloud. We wanted to write something that celebrates friendship, dancing, and that feeling you chase every weekend after a hard week.”

She continues, “It’s the token synth-pop banger on the album, the guilty pleasure, the one that gets you dragging your friend onto the dancefloor.”

I Think That I Might Love You received support from Creative Scotland and is out on the 8th of May via Ernest Jenning Record Co. and Fika Recordings. The album is now up for pre-order on Bandcamp.
