Deep Dive: coupdekat – Superglue

Following on from 2022’s Imaginary Girls EP, Superglue sees British musician coupdekat return to the fray in style. A sprightly and acerbic take on pop and indie, the upbeat and at times whimsical feel of the alt.pop arrangement doesn’t take away from the insightful nature of the lyrics. The artist tells us more about Superglue as part of our ongoing Deep Dive series.

About the song

Superglue is the first single from my next project/EP FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY. I wrote it about a boy who kept popping in and out of my life for years. I felt like we were stuck together no matter how hard we tried to forget each other.

Whilst the instrumental is bright and dreamy, lyrically it discusses co-dependency and red flags in a relationship, and I think these juxtapose well. It’s an homage to first love, self-reflection and coming of age relationships and my first love song he he!

Instrumentation

Instrumentally I took inspiration from The Reel In The Flickering Light by Christy Moore mixed with tinkerbell is overrated by Beabadoobee and Pinkpatheress. The folky, glittery guitars mixed with the breakbeat create a genre-fluid, nostalgic piece.

The video

The video was directed by myself and edited by @phoebedowlingmedia, I’ve always wanted my visuals to help in building a visual world around the song, therefore I like to be part of creating all my music videos and artworks.

As it’s a coming of age/teenage love song we filmed the music video in my hometown and with a VHS camera to continue my ‘DIY’ aesthetic similar to my previous videos. The saturated colouring and extremely sped up clips create a dreamy/nostalgic world through ‘rose tinted spectacles’ and the spray-painted doodles co inside with the single artwork.

Where does Superglue fit within your overall sound?

Whilst my first EP explored online, lockdown relationships and social media. My second EP explores a post lockdown world and my relationship with myself and others outside of my phone.

The mixture of live and computer instruments in this EP represents the real and the online life mix and the plethora of internet samples/sounds throughout the ep explore this as well. I wanted to create an EP that represents myself and my generation’s current world through music, something that seems almost familiar on a first listen.

Superglue will feature on FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY which is released on the 22nd of June. If you enjoyed listening to this track, head over to Apple Music, Spotify, and Deezer to hear more music, and keep up with news about the upcoming EP by following coupdekat on Twitter, Instagram or TikTok.
