New Music: Fold – Aphelion (ft. Mr. Gee)

Aphelion is the title track from Fold’s tribute album to the visionary black author and activist Lorraine Hansberry. They’ve teamed up with U.K. poet Mr. Gee on the song to create some amazing conscious hip hop, as you can hear below.

As the strings take flight and the beats and bass soothe the senses, a sublime mood reminiscent of the heady days of Acid Jazz underpins a passionate but never preachy polemic about the state of not just America, but Britain as well. It’s not a plea, or a moment of rage, but Mr. Gee’s words and performance are a calm, incisive, and highly inspirational account of why Black Lives Matter is not just a fad or phase, but a march to equality. While feet on the streets change things on the ground, songs like Aphelion will help change minds and beliefs.
