New Music: Genevieve & Milo – What a Wonderful Thing
Cape Town duo Genevieve & Milo get in touch with their need for faith and love on their latest single, What a Wonderful Thing.
Taken from their upcoming Moonflower album, the uplifting and life-embracing What a Wonderful Thing is full of imagery of living and love bursting forth, unrestrained and unbound. The arrangement takes from folk, classical, and pop in turn, fusing them, and inviting the listener to be involved and enraptured.
Genevieve Lee’s vocals have a range that is operatic in nature, with the lyrics comparable to the most colourful flowers in full bloom, delicate and dazzlingly beautiful. Lee may sing of being ‘only a woman’, yet she exudes the life-giving nature of womanhood in the calm ecstasy of her performance.
“This is a song for embracing that inner madness but also the full spectrum of being alive – beauty, lust, grief and surrender,” says Lee. “At its core the lyrics speak to the desire to be in love, not just in the romantic sense but in a longing for life. Embracing the gruesome and the beautiful, the painful and the revelatory. It is an admission of my deepest flaws but also my strengths.”
This song arrived in a flurry early one morning over a cup of coffee. I wanted to encapsulate the rawness of the human experience, of being a woman, of being in love. I was grappling with many things at this time: my relationship to God, to my spiritual journey, to romance and love and self-esteem. I had been denying so many of my less desirable feelings for so many years in order to feel more spiritually stable, perhaps more healed.”
“When we were recording the album, it felt as though none of the songs really made sense together; the themes and sounds were all so varied, but as we went along, the threads all came together. It feels really exciting to release something that is so multifaceted. To break all the conventions, we had put on ourselves about how our music ‘should’ sound vs what we were actually yearning to create,” continues Lee.
“This album feels like so many versions of us, unfiltered, uncensored and raw,” adds Milo. “We wanted to feel free to break down the limits we put on our creativity, to pull from all the different strands of inspiration and weave them together, sometimes using their differences to create big contrasts between songs.”
